LECTURES

Week 1⇒Introduction And Briefing

On our first day, Mr Hafiq gave us a brief introduction on the module and told us what to expect in the current semester. We were instructed to sign up a blogger account as all our assignments will be recorded in it. To get the ball rolling, Mr Hafiq let us start on some mini games like The Bezier Game and a Helpx pen tool mini game.

Reason why we would find characters appealing?

Because it's......
  • Iconic

What is the purpose of Chiaroscuro?

  • It's to increase the scene's dramatic tension by exaggerating the subject's importance using colour or light contrast

Reasons Chiaroscuro is used in visual narrative

Week 4⇒ Colour Blending Mode

  • Blending modes are useful for changing the object’s color by adding blending effects and colors to the chosen objects
  • Blending modes work depending on the position of the object on the layer or group
There are 6 types of blending modes in illustrator. Each of these modes works a little differently, so it's important to know which one to use for which effect.
  • Normal
  • Darken
  • Lighten
  • Contrast
  • Inversion
  • Component

Figure 1.3 6 Types of blending mode, week 4 (16/10/2023)

It would be easy to remember a few terminologies while trying to understand the various blending modes
  • The original color of the selected object of all the group is known as the Blend Color
  • The base color refers to the colors lying underneath the artwork book
  • The color resulted after applying the blend is known as the Resulting Color

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 1

EXERCISE⇒VORMATER CHALLENGE

For our first assignment, Mr Hafiz introduced vormater and challenged us to do a vormater challenge. A vormater is the ultimate design challenge that requires each artist to create a one-page visual by using only eight shapes within a set of given rules. The aim of the assignment is to give us student the chance to show our ability to create a stunning piece with limited means.

Mr Hafiz started with some basics like teaching us how to use the pen tool and the curvature tool in Adobe Illustrator. After teaching the basics, we started to explored the app and sharpen our skills.

To get an idea of what's the vormater challenge is all about, Mr Hafiz gave us some examples

Figure 1.1.2 Examples of Vormater, week 2 (2/10/2023)

After getting hang of the shapes, I started to combine the shapes into a new piece.
Figure 1.1.3 First attempt, week 2 (2/10/2023)
Figure 1.1.4 First attempt with colour, week 2 (2/10/2023)

I started off with something basic by combining the following shapes into the current character.  After piecing everything together, I filled the character with some colours.
  • the tentacle
  • the drop
  • the badge
  • the wurst

Subsequently, I started on something more challenging. I combine the following shapes into the current piece and fill it with colour.
  • the zerk
  • the drop
  • the chevrop
  • the bar
  • the badge
  • the wurst
  • the tentacle
After completing and confirmed my final design for the character, I added some gradient and shadow onto the piece.

EXERCISE⇒ CHIAROSCURO PEAR

For our second assignment, Mr Hafiz introduced Chiaroscuro Pear to us. We were taught how to use the pen tool to trace the outline of an image and divide the parts using the pathfinder tool. By learning all of that, we successfully mastered how to add lighting and shadow to our design.

After learning the basics, Mr Hafiz taught us how to have a slicing appearances on our design using the knife tool. Besides that, he also taught us how to edit our design and re-colour it.

REFLECTION

Learning Illustration And Visual Narrative was quite interesting as I didn't know that we could be so creative with the tools such as the pen tool, knife tools, colour blending and many more. It was quite a challenge for me as it was my first time using the Adobe Illustrator however with help and guidance, I managed to finish the assignments.
