LECTURES

Week 10⇒ Transitions & Gutters

Transitions and gutters are tools that comic book authors use to help progress the story, add certain effects, and convey specific ideas throughout the text. Though the author has the initial power while creating his or her work, the reader gets the final say in how they are going to use closer between panels to draw conclusions about what the author was trying to convey. McCloud describes six types of panel-to-panel transitions, each requiring a different degree of closure from the reader
  • Moment to moment
  • Action to action
  • Subject to subject
  • Scene to scene
  • Aspect to aspect
  • Non sequitur

    INSTRUCTIONS

    TASK 3

    EXERCISE⇒DIGITAL TRIPTYCH

For our third task, we were introduced to Digital Triptych, which is made up of three different panels/paintings/photographs that are intended to be displayed together. For the current task, we were instructed to select one of the Scott McCloud's transitions and create a before and after panel for the climatic turning point.

    RESEARCH

To have a head start, I began to do some research on which type of transition I would like to do and research on examples of digital triptych done by others.

Figure 1.1.0 Example of a aspect to aspect transition, week 10 (27/11/2023)

Figure 1.1.1 Example of a subject to subject transition, week 10 (27/11/2023)

Figure 1.1.2 Example of a moment to moment transition, week 10 (27/11/2023)

Figure 1.1.3 Example of a action to action transition, week 10 (27/11/2023)

Figure 1.1.4 Example of a scene to scene transition, week 10 (27/11/2023)

    SKETCHING

After doing some research, I decided to do a Scene To Scene transition. I started sketching out my before and after climatic turning point.

Figure 1.1.5 Before climatic turning point, week 10 (29/11/2023)

I chose this scene as my before climatic turning point as this scene is one of a main part of the urban legend where a young man named Buchuk who was searching through his dead grandfather’s possessions came across a dusty old suitcase. Upon opening it, he found it contained what looked like the withered corpse of a baby. To his horror, the baby opened its red eyes and began speaking to him. He realized that it was a Toyol. From this point onwards where the urban legend began.

Figure 1.1.6 After climatic turning point, week 10 (29/11/2023)

For the after climatic turning point panel, I created my own after panel as the urban legend ends after the Toyol sucked every drop of blood from Buchuk’s body until he was nothing more than a withered and desiccated corpse. I design the panel to be a worm's eyes view from the withered and desiccated corpse, watching the Toyol disappearing in the darkness waiting for its next predator.

    DIGITIZATION

After finalizing and getting Mr Hafiz's feedback for my final sketch, I started the digitize process. I used the pen tool, curvature and the direct selection tool for most of my most of my drawing in Illustrator. After drawing the ideas, I applied gradient and grain texture to most of my artwork.

    FINAL DIGITIZATION

After getting some feedbacks from Mr Hafiz for the digitization, I adjusted the design and did some changes to the texture and gradient for both panels to make it more complete.

    FEEDBACK

    Week 10

    • Mr Hafiz suggested to design the Toyol as walking away or disappearing in the dark for the after climatic turning point
    • Sketch was ok

    Week 11

    • Digitization looks ok

    REFLECTION

Learning Illustration and Visual Narrative was quite interesting as we get to learn many new stuff this week like what is transitions and gutters. I also found this week's task interesting as we get to do transit the previous urban legends task and add a before and after climatic turning point to the story. This week's task was an upgraded version challenge for me as it needed the combination skill's of task 1 and 2 and creativity, however with the guidance I got from Mr Hafiz and my friends, I managed to finish the tasks.
