UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (UNSDG)

Figure 1.0 UNSDG Goal 13 Climate Action, week 2 (13/02/2024)

From the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), I have chosen number 13, which is Climate Action as I feel it's essential to address climate change. Since young, we were taught to protect the ecosystems and biodiversity of the earth. However in actual fact, the world we lived in is extremely affected by pollution, facing global warming and people suffering from illness due to dust and sut. It's quite sad to see that the home which we lived in becomes substandard and in a risk of a crisis. Therefore, I would like to highlight this topic to spread the awareness on the importance of climate action so that we can have a green and healthy environment in the future.

Figure 1.1 UNSDG Goal 13 Climate Action Aims, week 2 (13/02/2024)

This goal is all about dealing with climate change. It means taking steps to reduce pollution that causes global warming. SDG 13 calls for an urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. It emphasizes the need for countries to take significant steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards. Besides, integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies, and planning. The goal aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius (preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius) above pre-industrial levels, which is crucial for preventing the most severe impacts of climate change. SDG 13 also underscores the importance of international cooperation and support to assist developing countries in their climate action efforts. By addressing climate change comprehensively, SDG 13 seeks to safeguard ecosystems, protect vulnerable communities, promote sustainable development, and build a more resilient and sustainable future for all.

ARTWORK CHOSEN THAT RESOLVE AROUND GOAL 13 - CLIMATE ACTION

Figure 1.2 'Atlas Holding Our World' by Karim Fakhoury, week 2 (13/02/2024)

Name Of The Artwork: Atlas Holding Our World
Design By: Karim Fakhoury

The reason I chose this artwork is because "Atlas holding our world," is an awareness art drawn by a designer named Karim Fakhoury from Montreal, Canada. The art contributes by addressing one of the major growing problems which is global warming. Through the artwork, we can understand that only we ourselves can change the current crisis as science and technology alone cannot reverse it. I notice that the piece represents how polluted the earth really is as Atlas struggled to carry a massive amount of waste while standing on a dirty, grunge pedestal. The pedestal is set in the ocean explains how plastics and trash are filling and polluting the oceans. He wanted to highlight that we are being 'crashed' by own waste therefore designed the background to be a storm probably imply to climate change and the impending doom that sits in the future if change is not made.

DESIGN PRINCIPLE WHICH I NOTICED IN 'ATLAS HOLDING OUR WORLD'

1. Contrast
  • The designer Karim Fakhoury designed the piece with a monochrome color as the theme which is the color black and white as he wanted to draw more attention about global warming.
  • We also can see the different between the normal ‘Atlas Carrying the World” which shows a powerful and positive impact to the world however the art style from Karim is darker and depressing as he wanted to express the emotions ‘struggling’, ‘loss of hope’ and ‘the end’.

2. Emphasis

  • The designer Karim Fakhoury emphasized the key element, which is Atlas is standing on a dirty grunge cake pedestal carrying a massive amount of wastes being position in the center of the piece.
3. Balance
  • The elements, composition, colors and space were distributed evenly throughout the piece.

4. Harmony And Unity

  • The theme and the elements in the piece collaborate well with each other to deliver the message to the viewers.
5. Movements
  • The designer Karim Fakhoury designed the rubbish to drop from the massive amount of wastes.
6. Symbol
  • Atlas is used in the pieces as the main emphasis as Atlas is known as a mythical character and the god of strength and endurance who was punished by the Olympus to hold the sky from falling onto the earth.
TASK 2
EXERCISE⇒ VISUAL ANALYSIS
22.02.2024 ~ 07.03.2024 (Week 3 ~ Week 5)

I have chosen the current design 'Atlas Holding The World' by Karim Fakhoury in task 1

Figure 1.3 'Atlas Holding The World', week 3 (19/02/2024)

Phase 1: Observation

This piece is designed as a portrait layout. In the center view, we can see the back view of Atlas, who is trying his best to carry the massive wastes on his shoulder. Karim designed Atlas to stand on a dirty grunge pedestal as he’s symbolized as the god of strength and endurance. We can see that the wastes started to fall as Atlas struggled to withstand the weight. On the left corner, Karim drawn a seagull as he wanted to reinforce the idea that the waste also causes damage to innocent animals. As for the visual elements, Karim used monochrome color for the theme. Karim also chose a stormy weather at the seas as the background.

Phase 2: Analysis

For visually balance, the elements, composition, colors and the space are distributed evenly. For emphasis, Karim emphasized the key element in the center, which is Atlas standing on a pedestal carrying a massive waste. The massive waste started to drop indicates Atlas struggled to hold on. Atlas is known as a mythical character and symbol as God of strength and endurance. Karim highlighted that even Atlas struggled to withstand the massive weight not to mention we ‘living being’. The color theme for the design is monochrome as he wanted to draw more attention to express the emotions ‘struggling’, ‘loss of hope’ and ‘the end’. The theme and the elements collaborate harmony well to deliver the message to the viewers.

Phase 3: Interpretation

‘Atlas Holding The World’ was designed by Karim Fakhoury who is based in Montreal, Canada. In 2009, at 16, Karim did a project for global warming visually explaining the effects had on their planet in 6 different impacts where he designed the current piece. Karim’s design was inspired by ‘Atlas Carrying The World’, where Atlas was shown and respected as the god of strength and endurances who carried the sky for eternity. However in the piece, Atlas is struggling to handle the massive plastics while standing on a filthy pedestal. The overall view looks like a chess pawn as Atlas is used as a pawn and laborer holding on the waste that was created.

DETAIL EXPLANATION

1. Overall layout for the art piece
  • I have chosen a chiaroscuro theme as I wanted to divide my art piece into two parts, one fill with bright and various colors trees, flowers and clean healthy grass. While the other is fill with darker colors containing a filthy bloody hands, lifeless trees and polluted sand fill with wastes like aluminum, plastic, dry leaves and pebbly bumpy surfaces.
2.  Overall contrast for the art piece
  • The bright colorful forest imitates the outcome of a beauty lively nature if we human being have defended for the resources ‘mother nature’ has once provided us. While the darker lifeless part imitates the outcome of a lifeless polluted forest with nothing left but a waste land.
3. Wastes
  • The aluminum, plastics and tins imitate the pollution human have created.
4. Filthy bloody hand and red strings
  • The filthy bloody hands and the red strings pulling the trans-human imitates corrupted leaders, obstacles and uncertain factors pulling the string behind causing climate change and global warming.
5. Trans-human
  • The human in the center has some of its body parts wrap around with aluminum imitates the diseases and the aftermath of climate change has caused.
6. Trans-human's position
  • The trans-human is designed in a moving position and the overall design is incline as I would like to express that in the current generation, climate action has started to have an impact to us. For example, government implementing the 5R project and environment campaigns. However, there are still space and improvement needed to take for us to head to the next step and a brighter future.

RATIONALE

In recent years, climate change has posed one of the most significant threats to our planet. Therefore, I would like to express the importance of climate action. Through the art piece, I chose a chiaroscuro theme as I would like to express the differences between a bright harmonical and a filthy depressed future if action were or weren’t taken. For a key element as an emphasis, I placed a trans-human in a moving position in the center. The trans-human who’s being hold back by red strings tied to a corrupted bloody gigantic hand is struggling to walk up the bumpy incline hill to cross over to the other side as I wanted to express the obstacles and uncertain factors we need to overcome, like corrupted leaders and the persistency by human in taking care of our planet. I also designed the human to be a trans-human as I wanted to highlight that, the climate change would affect us too besides the environment. Besides, I would like to spread the message that, nevertheless that we have an uphill battle up ahead, we should fight till the last man stands as the decisions to have a better future fall in our palms.

REFLECTION

1. What have I learnt in this module?
  • In this module, I have learnt the basic fundamental concepts and methodologies essential for my future designing career. We were also taught how to explore and observe various design principles, identify and analyse different art work and recreate from the inspirations and ideas we get from the previous steps to enhance as well as broaden our sense in design.

2. What did I enjoy the most?

  • I enjoyed my time for this module as I was able to let my creativity and imagination run wild. However the part I most enjoyed was communicating with my lecturer, Dr Charles for feedbacks and advices as he let me discovered lots of new knowledge and guided me to see from different perspectives which I have not seen or consider before as well as encouraged me to be confident in my own work.

3. What did I not enjoy the most?

  • I would say the time length of the module. As it was a short sem, we only had 7 weeks to complete the module. The limited time length and datelines have limited the opportunities to produce a more perfect outcome. However, Dr Charles do said, we cannot be satisfy with our own work as there are always space of improvements and step to take to reach the next level.

4. What have I learnt about myself through this module?

  • I have learnt that I'm capable of creating an artwork by handcraft instead of just using Adobe designing apps. Throughout the process, I have enjoyed myself with crafting and creating artwork hands-on with modelling clay and papers. After this task, I felt I could think out of the box more and not just limit myself on digital arts.

5. What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

  • In my learning journey, I think my perspective and analysis on understanding the world of design and art has changed due to the influenced by Dr Charles. However, my passion for design and designing style are still set in stone.

6. What could be improved in this module?

  • I don't think there's anything I would like to change or improved in the module as I had a fun and had an enjoyable journey. I was quite grateful to meet Mr Charles as our lecturers for the modules as I learnt quite a lot from him as well as getting guidance's and feedbacks from him patiently. Throughout the 7 weeks, my growth in my knowledges and fundamental concepts for Design Principles have bestowed me the ability to see and understand the world of art and design that surrounds us every day more better.
