LECTURES / TUTORIAL/PRACTICAL

Week 9⇒ Audio Editing: Sound Shaping With EQ

TUTORIAL

For week 9, Mr Martin taught us how to edit audio and sound shape our voice in Adobe Audition.

Week 10⇒ Stop Motion Trial Shot

PRACTICAL

For our tenth week, we had a stop motion trial shot in groups guided by Mr Martin. We were taught to experiment and observe with the camera and phone shoot to differentiate out which has better outcome. Besides, the aim of the trial shoot is to let us familiar ourselves with the
equipments and the experiences to prepare for our final project's shoot.

RESEARCH

To have a head start, I began to do some research to get a briefly idea on what type of stop motion I wanted to do.

PROPOSAL

For this project, we were given a choice to either partner up with a coursemate to do a 1 minute stop motion or do a 30 second solo project. After giving some thought to it, I decided to pair up with Melvin Yung to do a 1 minute stop motion as my final project. After doing some research and brainstorming, Melvin and I quickly gather our ideas together to discuss a proposal out.

SYNOPSIS

Everyone more or less felt this once in their life, that is the sudden free fall feeling when they are in deep slumber. Our character, who is going to experience a wild & wondrous nightmare when he rest on his sofa. From his FPV, he travel across the sky, the deep ocean, the vast space and later feel the free-fall motion again. But there are something chasing him in the dream, causing him to escape countless time from the voice. The character wakes up only to find himself change gender. The ending leaves viewers with open-ended possibilities.

MATERIALS AND PROGRESS

After consulting Mr Martin, he approved our crazy dream idea. However, Mr Martin did advise to make some plot twist to the story as he felt it was quite blend. He suggest us to run our imagination wild and consider how to shoot later. We added a story where we met "something" chasing us and a treasure chest scene. After that, Mr Martin gave us a green light to proceed.

Melvin and I started to prepare with all the materials needed. We prepared material like,
  • Cardboard
  • A4 Paper
  • Drawing Papers
  • Colour Papers
  • Modelling Clay
  • Watercolour
  • Colour Pencil

After preparing the material, me and Melvin started to prep our scenes. Throughout the whole project, most of the material was either draw, paint, cut by hand or self custom hand made model as we felt customaking every scene may lead to a more detail and satisfy work. More important, largely saved our cost.

After preparing finish all the backgrounds and materials, we booked the studio from Mr Martin to proceed with our shoot. For the shoot, Melvin and I decided to use the DSLR method.  With the help and guidances from Mr Martin, we were able to set up the camera position and the lighting successfully.  For every scene, we adjusted the props as detail as possible so that we can get a smooth cut.

DIGITIZATION

After completing the shoot, it's time to edit.
For this part, Melvin was responsible to edit and combine all the scenes into a video while I was incharge of the sound effect and background ambients of the stop motion video.

I started to prep and find the sources for each sound and ambient effect after getting the compile video from Melvin.

After completing the list. I started to edit the sound and ambiences using Adobe Premiere Pro.

I started by putting in the main clip and adding in my voice clips, ambient and background sound effects. I have a total of 8 audio track. A1-6 are sound effects while A7 to A8 are ambience and background sound effects.

REFLECTION

Learning Stop Motion was quite interesting as we get learn how to experiment with different shots and slowing down normal video speeds. Moreover, we have the opportunity to create our own props and design our own scenario while expressing our imagination and creativity. For this task, I got to learn to be more creative and imaginative to create an interesting video. It was quite challenging at first, however with the guidances and advices by Mr Martin and my teammate, Melvin, everything sailed smoothly.
