LECTURES

Week 1⇒ Introduction & Briefing

On our first day, Mr Fauzi gave us a brief introduction on the module and told us what to expect for the current semester. To have a head start, we were advised to research on our favorite style of motion graphics in Pinterest for future references.

Week 2⇒ Introduction To Motion Graphics

What is Motion Graphics?

  • Motion graphics is animation, but with text as a major component. Essentially, it’s animated graphic design.
  • “Motion graphics” or “Motion Design is graphic design put into motion.
  • Motion graphics is an art, like graphic design. Similarly, motion graphics borrow elements from photography, illustration, typography, and more to create visually engaging moving compositions.
  • Motion graphics are a way to communicate with the viewer, and add depth to the story. Together with music and effective copy, they can give us a message. We use them to create ads, title sequences for movies, videos and to share information.
Examples of Motion Graphics
  • Branding
  • Television Title Sequence
  • Storytelling
  • Creating Awareness
  • Explain a concept
  • Product video

Different between Motion Graphics & 3D Animation

The purpose of 3D animation is to create vivid digital scenes full of detail and believability. The characters, objects, and backgrounds must all be carefully considered to produce an entertaining result. Each aspect of a scene must be realized, especially in interactive works where a player has control of the camera angle. 3D animations ultimately tell stories that come in all shapes and sizes.

However, the purpose of motion graphics is to convey information in a memorable and engaging way. Without movement, sound, and color, many people will quickly forget the information shared in news stories and social media posts. Motion graphics can be entertaining, but it is more accurate to call them stimulating. They grab a viewer’s attention just long enough for the topic of conversation to be understood. While 3D animations can be as long as feature length films, most motion graphics productions are quite small in scope.

Week 3⇒ Compositing Tool Kit

What is Composition?
  • Composition is the term used to describe the arrangement of the visual elements. It is how the elements of art and design such as line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space are organized or composed according to the principles of art and design.
  • Composition refers to a school of thought around how a painting or digital artwork is laid out to best flow harmoniously. It focuses on how the visual elements are arranged. It works closely with the principles of artistic design.
Elements Of Composition In Art
  • Unity
  • Movement
  • Balance
  • Rhythm
  • Contrast
  • Pattern
  • Proportion
  • Focus
Rules To Be Notice
  • The ‘Golden Ratio’ which is 1:1.62
  • The rule of ‘odds’
  • The rule of thirds
  • The rule of space

Week 4⇒ Kinetic Typography

For this week, Mr Fauzi gave us a tutorial on kinetic typography where we were taught to do motion graphics with fonts. Besides, we were also given a tutorial video on Youtube to have a deepen understanding on the topic.

INTRODUCTION

PROJECT 1⇒ TECHNICAL & MOTION GRAPHICS SENSIBILITIES

For our first project, Mr Fauzi introduced Technical and Motion Graphics Sensibilities to us which we are given variety of tasks from basics to advance that develop our motion graphics sensibilities by increasing our technical proficiency and knowledge.

For this task, we are required to,

  • Each student will explore and increase their technical proficiency and knowledge levels in the appropriate software individually but also with assistance of peers and facilitator.

RESEARCH

To have a head start, I begin by doing some research on Pinterest and Youtube to have a better idea on what to do.

PART 2

PROGRESS

After doing the first part of the project, I started combining the 8 motion graphics into 1. After a few try and errors, I slowly got the hang of the it. Then I added in the music which I found in Youtube as the background music.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 3
  • Don't be afraid to try and error.
  • Mr Fauzi advised us to use the same grey colour background for part one as it's be easier to combine the rest in part 2.

EXTRA

The Show Graduate Showcase

Figure 3.0.0 The Show Graduate Showcase

During week 2, our lecturer Mr Fauzi invited us to visit our seniors' graduate showcase at Atrium The Starhill, Bukit Bintang KL. I went for both of the days as I felt it was quite a good experience for me to know ahead what to expect for my final year project.

For both of the days, board stands which are showcasing our seniors work from different specialize and course from The Design School was hanged throughout the sessions.

The works showcasing was mostly specialize from Bachelor of Design in Creative Media and from our school's new course Bachelor of Interactive Spatial Design. After looking and analysing most of the final year work shown, I was quite amused and found most of them quite interesting. I also snap down few of them as my future references.

After scrolling around seeing the seniors' showcase, it was time for the design speaker session where seniors and graduate seniors came and gave a talk and advices as a designer.

Figure 3.0.5 Mural Competition Planning & Discussing Stage

For the second day, when my friends En Yu, Jia Ern and me arrived it was time for the mural competition. At that time, we thought it was an exhibition on previous mural competition yet it was an spot going competition! So since we were there and Ms Anis sitting behind us taking attendances, I asked Ms Anis jokingly that could we join the competition. Surprisingly, Ms Anis welcomed us with open hands. The three of us was shocked as the competition was starting in 20 minutes while none of us knew the theme or whatsoever about the competition. After triple confirming with Ms Anis and randomly joining a group, the competition started.

At first, it was a rocky start as we were brainstorming on the spot on the theme "Unity to diversity. diversity to unity". Fortunately, everyone in our group was motivated and cooperative. We came to a conclusion on an idea quickly and started drawing out our ideas.

Figure 3.0.7 Final Outcome

After a tense 2 hour, we successfully finish our masterpiece. We sent our work for judging and waited anxiously for the result. At that moment, I didn't had the confidence that we couldn't place and comfort myself that I'm here for the experiences. However deep down, I'm finger crossing we would place hahaha.

And ya we did!!! We placed third in the competition! We were all so shocked and couldn't believed we placed. Most of us was blurring out and couldn't accept the fact that happen. I was quite shocked as well but I guess teamwork really makes the dream works. Throughout the competition, I met new amazing people and step up my game in taking on a sudden competition. Therefore, it was quite an amazing and tense experience for me.

REFLECTION

Working on Technical and Motion Graphics Sensibilities has been a fun ride where I got to enhance my skills and knowledge in Adobe After Effect. Besides, it was new experience as it was my first time learning motion graphics. Moreover, we have the opportunity to analyze and explore different type of motion graphics suitable for the equation This project was challenging yet interesting for me as I need to combine the motion graphics skills learned however with the guidance I got from Mr Fauzi and my friends, I managed to finish the tasks.
