LECTURES

Week 5

For this week, Mr Razif shared some tips on Adobe Audition to guide us on our coming assignments. He also brief and showed us some past examples from seniors for project 2 to let us have a brief understanding of the project.

1. Hard Limiter

  • A hard limiter is a type of audio level compression that limits the maximum level of a signal by reducing the gain of an amplifier.
  • It's used to prevent audio from distorting or peaking, and to bring the loudness to the right level.
2. Mastering
  • Mastering is the final step in the audio production process, where a recorded mix is prepared for distribution and playback:
  • Mastering ensures that a mix sounds great on any device, from speakers to large club systems. It also maintains a consistent sound across an album's tracks.

How to Group Track

Multitrack → Track  Stereo Bus Track

How To Create A Sound Environment
  • Identify the sound needed for the project
  • Determine which sound effect and background ambience are needed
  • Seek out the source

Week 6 Diwali Holiday

Week 7 ⇒ Consultation Week

INTRODUCTION

PROJECT 2⇒ AUDITORY IMAGING

For our second project, Mr Razif introduced Auditory Imaging to us which we are task
to create an audio image using any of the combination below. The audio should create an image for the first person point of view to be able to visualize on what is going on based on just the audio tracks. It should be able to tell a story for the chosen scenario. We are not allowed to use any voice or dialogs.

The choice scenario are:
  1. Wildlife + Background
  2. Everyday Home Life + Background
  3. Cities + Transport + Exterior Atmosphere
  4. Industry and Electronic sounds + Background
  5. Weather + Background
  6. Market + Rural atmosphere + Background

RESEARCH

To have a head start. I started doing some research on the topic. Our lecturer Mr Razif shared with us an interesting example from Youtube where we get to listen a spatial audio in a first person view as a customer in a barber shop.

AUDIO STORYBOARDING & AUDIO SOURCING

After doing some research, I started to draft out the story I wanted to present. I decided start my story as a tired woman named Cecilia who was came home stressful and tired came across a fun fair advertisement hosted near her house. She decided to go as time was still early. The project would be based on her trip to the funfair and how the cheerful music, bursts of laughter as well as the hum of carnival rides smoothen Cecilia's mood.

After drafting out the story and consulting Mr Razif, I started to source the audio effects and background ambiances. Most of the audios are from Youtube.

FINAL AUDIO IMAGING

After preparing the storyboard and the finding all the audio sources, I started editing the audio in Adobe Audition.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 5
  • The storyline must be in a first person perspective
  • Categorize foreground background
  • Cut down on the story and just start the story from Cecilia's home to avoid confusion

REFLECTION

Working on Auditory Imaging has been a fun ride where I got to do a project based on just hearing. Besides, it was new experience as we need to be planned the audio carefully and specific to avoid confusion as viewer can only listen to the audio. Moreover, we have the opportunity to analyze and explore different type of sound effects and ambients suitable for the story. This project was challenging yet interesting for me as I need to combine the audio editing skills learned however with the guidance I got from Mr Razif and my friends, I managed to finish the tasks.
