INTRODUCTION

PROJECT 1⇒ RESEARCH IMPLEMENTATION DRAFT DISSERTATION

For project 1, Ms Hayati gave us a briefing on Research Implementation Draft Dissertation where we are required to put together relevant primary and secondary data to form analysis, discussion and conclusion revolving around their research problem.

For this project we are require to,

Students are to utilise primary and secondary data to write an in-depth evaluation, no less than 7000 words, that critically analyses and discusses their research problem and arrives at a conclusion. The contents of the dissertation are as follows:
  • Acknowledgements
  • Abstract
  • Table of Contents page
  • Introduction to the dissertation
  • Research Rational, Research Theme/Topic and Research Problem
            o Problem statement
            o Research objectives
            o Research questions
            o Research Conceptual Framework Diagram
  • Literature review
  • Research Methodology
  • Results/ Findings
  • Analysis and discussion
  • Conclusion
  • Project Recommendation / Future Research
  • Reference list
  • Appendices (sample interview questions and questionnaire questions)

PROJECT 2⇒ VISUAL DESIGN PUBLICATION FINAL DISSERTATION

For project 2, Ms Hayati gave us a briefing on Visual Design Publication Final Dissertation where we are required to design the publication of the dissertation. The concept of the publication must be relevant to the research topic.

For this project we are require to,

Since the e-publication format is expected, page layout, publication size, font, font size, are predetermined by the lecturer. Best to keep at A5 size in case the programme requires printing them in hardcopy format for any future audit or MQA accreditation process purpose. Other design considerations are to be made by the student, guided by the lecturer
during tutorials.

The dissertation cover should have the title of the research, along with the student's name. The following must be found behind the title page: (Please refer to the example provided in this document)
  • Student's full name (as appear in the registry)
  • Student number
  • The Design School at Taylor's University, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.
  • Design Research Dissertation (DIS60304)
  • Bachelor of Design Creative Media
  • Semester intake
  • Date of submission

PROJECT 3⇒ RESEARCH FOR ARTICLE PUBLICATION

For project 3, Ms Hayati gave us a briefing on Article Publication where Writing is the most important means of communicating. Research and the publication complements practice and theory. Publication in peer-reviewed journals also gives international recognition to an individual, department, university, and institution. In some cases where a topic of major global importance is included in a publication, the author, country, and even the region may also get greater recognition.

For this project we are require to,
  1. Adapt their dissertation into a concise paper suitable for publication, adhering to The Design School KREATE journal's requirements.
  2. The description in KREATE journal is available at https://thedesignschool.taylors.edu.my/Kreate/index.html
  3. Students as the author are to download the KREATE Raw Input template from https://thedesignschool.taylors.edu.my/Kreate/how-to-submit.html with the specific font to be used, and the authors are not allowed to edit the format set in the template as described in the Manuscript Preparation Guide of the journal.

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION

EXPERIENCE

Completing design research dissertation was quite a rewarding experience for me as I got to carry out my own study research and have a deeper understanding on how to do a good research. Throughout the process, I have conducted a lot of research so that I could apply the knowledge gained to my research. Starting a new research of my own and refining it was confusing at the start as I didn’t know where to begin or what to do. However, it quickly turned into a fascinating exploration of doing research and learning new knowledge. By refining and getting feedback as well as guidance from my lecturer, Mr Asrizal I learned and improved along the way.

The topic I chose last semester to research on was the impact of HUD clutter towards user experience on game interface specifically on a game called Maplestory which I played since young. In the current generation, gaming has become an important ‘hobby’ for everyone as it is a platform for users to socialise and lets users temporarily get away from their stressful life. However, due to some specific issues like having a cluttered HUD user interface users are hindered from fully engaging with the game. Therefore, I conducted research on identifying and addressing accessibility barriers and HUD clutter within user interface (UI) in Maplestory so that players can fully participate and enjoy the user and game experiences.

OBSERVATION

I found out that we couldn’t just take any random articles on the web to assist in our research. Instead, websites like ResearchGate and Google Scholar were recommended as they had been filter and have a proper citations. Besides, I also discovered how to be more observant and info digestion from often reading articles and paragraphs of a zillion words during the researching process.

I also started noticing the tiniest details as well as strength and weakness of an article which helped me improve my research approach and analytical skills. It’s like undercovering and levelling up my skills as a student designer and a researcher.

FINDINGS

One of the profound revelations during this learning experience was understanding the essential elements of conducting research is crucial for producing meaningful and reliable results. For instance, choosing an appropriate methodology where I need to decide between qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods or determine how to gather the necessary data. As a result throughout the 14 weeks, I have gained knowledge and skills to analyse as well as complete a whole research.
