LECTURES / TUTORIALS

Week 1⇒Introduction And Briefing


On our first day, Mr Martin gave us a brief introduction on the module and told us what to expect for the current semester. We were instructed to sign up a blogger account as well as a Pinterest account as it will be convenient and beneficial for our future assignments. To get the ball rolling, Mr Martin let us start on some mini exercises like The Bezier Game

To let us have a head start on what Photoshop is, Mr Martin gave us a task which is list down 3 favorite graphic design work done by Photoshop from Pinterest and our reasons.

The reason I like this design work is because the dark and cold tone colours gives out a sense of peacefulness. It feels like you're underwater but at the same time in space gazing at the beautiful planets and jellyfishes floating around. Most importantly having your loved ones beside.

I feel like this design work describes we should always remain to our original aspiration. The reason why I said this is because in the current century, we are always been given high expectation by our parents, our bosses, our teachers not to mention ourselves. We humans are always going beyond, chasing people's footsteps and reaching higher places. But frankly we are just humans, not superman nor woman, not owning a 'steel body' and don't have unlimited energy. Therefore, it's actually ok to fail or slow down your footsteps once in a while. Just be happy and be ourselves.

This design work describes a book showing different places in the world. People always say "Knowledge Is Power" and we can get that by reading. Some people in the world use 'knowledge' as a opportunity to turn their and their family's fate around. Therefore, everyone should have the privilege to gain knowledge.

Week 2⇒ Introduction To Photoshop


On our second week, Mr Martin gave us an introduction to Photoshop. He taught us the basic tools like how to use the lasso tool, pen tool, object selection tool, quick selection tool and layering.

TUTORIAL

Mr Martin began by teaching us how to crop the tables into the image using the manual way and the easy way with the pen tool, object selection tool and masking.

Week 3⇒ Blending Mode

      

For week 3, Mr Martin taught us how to apply the blending mode. During tutorial, Mr Martin taught us how to use the modes and let us mess around with different modes to see it's differences.

TUTORIAL

I copied and pasted the smoke image above the coffee and applied blending mode to blend the smoke with the image.

I copied and paste the flock of birds image into the sunset image and applied blending mode to blend the birds with the sunset image.

Week 4⇒ Recoloring 

For this week, Mr Martin taught us how to recolor a black and white image.

TUTORIAL

STEP 1
  • We started by selecting the hair with the quick selection tool and applied the select and mask tool. 
STEP 2
  • I used the refine edge brush tool to refine the hair of the image and applied a layer mask. 
STEP 3
  • I added a new solid color layer to the image and picked a suitable hair color for the image
STEP 4
  • Continue the steps for the skin, eyes, lips and clothes 
  • (Select parts ⇾ Apply the select and mask tool ⇾ Refine the image with the refine edge brush tool ⇾ Apply layer mask ⇾ Apply a new solid color layer)
STEP 5
  • Applied a new solid color layer and applied a suitable background color 
STEP 6
  • To refine the design, we were taught to invert the image (control + i) and use the brush tool to brush the black part of the image.

INTRODUCTION

TASK 1

EXERCISE⇒ COLLAGE

For our first exercise, Mr Martin introduced collage to us, which is a visual representation made from assembly of different forms, materials and sources creating a new whole. He started teaching us the basic tools we need for the assignment and tasked us to think of 3 different and creative collages. After getting hang on the basics of Photoshop, I started on the collage.

RESEARCH

To have a head start, I did some research on Pinterest to get an idea of how to design a collage.

I started on the collage by designing how to combine the images given by Mr Martin.

After getting feedbacks from Mr Martin and improving my collage, I finalize my final collage with collage design attempt 4.

EXERCISE⇒ DIGITAL IMAGING 01 (BLENDING MODE)

For this exercise, Mr Martin introduced Blending mode to us, which can be think as a blending of a base layer and a blend layer to achieve different effects. We were instructed to blend an image of ourself into the Hearst Mansion image for this exercise.

TUTORIAL

I started with the step by step tutorial given by Mr Martin on how to blend Shazam into the Hearst Mansion image.

After getting hang off the tutorial, I started on blending myself into Hearst Mansion.

EXERCISE⇒ DIGITAL IMAGING 02 (RECOLORING)

For this exercise, Mr Martin introduced Recoloring to us, which can be known as to recolor or try different palettes, change the hue as well as make the image lighter or darker. We were instructed to pick a black and white image that we like from the images we were provided by Mr Martin. 

TUTORIAL

I started with the step by step tutorial given by Mr Martin on how to recolor a black and white image.

After getting hang off the tutorial, I started on the recoloring process. I chose the current image for my task.

  • Blending exercise looks fine

REFLECTION

Learning Digital Photography and Imaging was quite interesting as we get to learn something new every week and required us to be creative as well as thinking out of the box for each exercise. It was quite a challenge for me at first as it was also my first time doing artwork using Photoshop but with the guidance, I managed to finish the assignment.
