Design Principles Task 2 / Visual Analysis

INTRODUCTION

TASK 2

EXERCISE⇒ VISUAL ANALYSIS

For our second task, Dr Yip introduced Visual Analysis to us, which we are needed to assess, investigate, document and analyze the existing art/design work we have selected in Task 1. We would also study the design principles found in that piece, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal chosen.

For this task, we are required to

  • Write a 300 to 350 word visual analysis of the selected design (refer to Visual Analysis lecture notes and guide).
  • Include reference links where applicable.

I have chosen the current design 'Atlas Holding The World' by Karim Fakhoury in task 1

Figure 1.0 'Atlas Holding The World', week 3 (19/02/2024)

Phase 1: Observation

This piece is designed as a portrait layout. In the center view, we can see the back view of Atlas, who is trying his best to carry the massive wastes on his shoulder. Karim designed Atlas to stand on a dirty grunge pedestal as he’s symbolized as the god of strength and endurance. We can see that the wastes started to fall as Atlas struggled to withstand the weight. On the left corner, Karim drawn a seagull as he wanted to reinforce the idea that the waste also causes damage to innocent animals. As for the visual elements, Karim used monochrome color for the theme. Karim also chose a stormy weather at the seas as the background.

Phase 2: Analysis

For visually balance, the elements, composition, colors and the space are distributed evenly. For emphasis, Karim emphasized the key element in the center, which is Atlas standing on a pedestal carrying a massive waste. The massive waste started to drop indicates Atlas struggled to hold on. Atlas is known as a mythical character and symbol as God of strength and endurance. Karim highlighted that even Atlas struggled to withstand the massive weight not to mention we ‘living being’. The color theme for the design is monochrome as he wanted to draw more attention to express the emotions ‘struggling’, ‘loss of hope’ and ‘the end’. The theme and the elements collaborate harmony well to deliver the message to the viewers.

Phase 3: Interpretation

‘Atlas Holding The World’ was designed by Karim Fakhoury who is based in Montreal, Canada. In 2009, at 16, Karim did a project for global warming visually explaining the effects had on their planet in 6 different impacts where he designed the current piece. Karim’s design was inspired by ‘Atlas Carrying The World’, where Atlas was shown and respected as the god of strength and endurances who carried the sky for eternity. However in the piece, Atlas is struggling to handle the massive plastics while standing on a filthy pedestal. The overall view looks like a chess pawn as Atlas is used as a pawn and laborer holding on the waste that was created.
